request an appointmentWhat are custom orthotics?
Custom orthotics are shoe inserts that address various foot problems and conditions. Orthotics can correct improper foot movement, provide additional support, and protect your feet.
Landmark Foot and Ankle Center creates custom orthotics to address your particular foot issues. A custom orthotic is a prescription from a doctor that you wear in your shoes.
Other types of orthotics exist, including over-the-counter (OTC) options you can buy at a drugstore, as well as higher quality OTC that you can purchase at Landmark Foot and Ankle Center. The main difference between OTC orthotics and custom orthotics is that your custom orthotics fit your specific foot while OTC orthotics aren’t personalized.
When would I need custom orthotics?
You might need custom orthotics if you’re having foot pain, heel pain, mobility issues, or other ongoing foot challenges. Some common reasons to get custom orthotics can include:
- Bunions
- Back pain
- Tendonitis
- Bursitis
- Diabetes-related foot problems
- Plantar fasciitis
- Arthritis
- Flat feet or fallen arches
- High arches
- Hammertoe
- Heel spurs
You don’t necessarily need to have foot problems to enjoy the advantages of custom orthotics. By wearing custom orthotics, you can optimize your foot balance, perfect your foot movement, reduce pressure, and even prevent injuries. They may also help with athletic performance.
How does the custom orthotics process work?
You don’t need messy foot impressions to get custom orthotics anymore. Landmark Foot and Ankle Center uses the newest state-of-the-art digital equipment to design orthotics. You stand on a digital scanner, making movements when directed by your doctor.
The scanner creates 3D images and takes highly detailed foot measurements to determine the best ways to improve your foot health and function. With the information from that scan, your specialist can write a prescription for custom orthotics. Then, the in-house lab uses that prescription to fabricate your new custom orthotics.
How long do custom orthotics last?
Harder (rigid) orthotics generally last longer than soft orthotics, but in general, all quality custom orthotics have excellent longevity. With proper care, you can usually expect at least a few years of consistent wear.
If you notice your orthotics wearing down, or if they don’t feel as supportive as they once did, contact the office to ask about an adjustment or updated prescription.
